United Nations Removes Sanctions on President of Syria Before White House Visit

Security Council representatives voted in favour to a United States-backed measure ending penalties on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa before his White House visit the coming week.

He was appointed interim leader after leading an insurgent campaign that ousted the previous leader in December 2024, concluding 13 years of domestic strife.

The US representative Mike Waltz at the United Nations stated the United Nations delivered "an emphatic political statement" that acknowledged Syria entered "a different period" after Assad's removal.

Previously, he faced United Nations restrictions as the leader of the Muslim faction HTS, which was formerly linked to the extremist organization. Washington eliminated the organization from the catalog of international terrorist organizations in July.

Further Restrictions Lifted

The UN also removed sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab.

The Syrian diplomatic chief expressed satisfaction with the elimination of the penalties, declaring through digital channels: "The nation shows its gratitude toward America and to friendly nations for backing of Syria and its people."

Forthcoming Presidential Visit

President Sharaa's presidential meeting on Monday comes after American leader Donald Trump said the Syrian leader demonstrated "substantial headway" towards bringing peace to the war-torn country.

Subsequent to their talks, Trump said Sharaa had "a legitimate chance to unify the country".

Both presidents held discussions on their first occasion in May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia on a tour of the Middle East.

Subsequent to that discussion, America's leader characterized the Syrian as a "strong individual" with a "very strong past".

His Islamist group HTS was al-Qaeda's affiliate within Syria before he cut connections back in 2016.

Prior United States Journey

This week's diplomatic engagement is not Sharaa's first trip to America in the current year. This past fall, he made history as the initial Syrian president to speak before the United Nations gathering at UN headquarters in almost 60 years.

In his speech, he declared the nation was "restoring its proper position among the nations of the world" and expressed solidarity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
